I’ve gotten rid of a stove and a/c for junk (someone made a couple bucks and I got them off my porch) and I’ve been able to help out some families that had been burned out of their homes with towels and sheets. If you have more than you want to load into the car and deliver as a tax-deductible donation to any local shop, consider using Freecycle (it’s great for giving things to your neighbors, as well as finding items they offer for free).

Don’t forget to be friendly, have enough small bills and change on hand and lower your prices at the end of the day to avoid putting things back in that remote corner of your garage. When the sale ends, take the unsold items to Goodwill, a local charity or post them on Freecycle. And remember how many signs you put out and where you put them so you can take them all down.

Summit County also has some great Internet tools for savings. In addition to the Summit Daily’s classified ads and craigslist, we have a branch of the Freecycle network (groups.freecycle.org/SummitFreecycle). This is a great place where parents can post messages that they are looking for certain sizes of clothes, or giving away piles of toys. I’ve gotten some amazing toys and clothes through this exchange, and have also passed along our kids’ stuff to some great homes. Everyone wins!

In the summertime, it helps to use a lot of smaller tubs rather than one big one, that way they’re easier to dump and scrub. Mom uses the empty plastic tubs our mineral licks come in as water tubs—they’re the perfect size for sheep and goats. Bigger mineral tubs work for horses and cows. If you don’t have any, join your local Freecycle list and ask for unwanted tubs. Farmers are glad to give them to people who can use them.
