Freecycle.org is a worldwide movement made up of many individual groups across the globe.
The motto is “One Person’s Trash can truly be another’s treasure.” It’s a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Williston residents looking to get rid of unwanted items have a new venue to keep those items out of landfills.
Freecycle is “a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills,” according to the Freecycle website.
The local group has the same goal.
“Freecycle is a group that was started to promote recycling, only it’s a different kind of recycling,” Freecycle member Serena Woodward said. “Instead of throwing your old stuff in the trash, you give it to someone else. The main premise is that if you take something from Freecycle you’re agreeing not to sell it. If you decide that you didn’t need it or you’re done with it, you give it to someone else. It keeps stuff out of landfills.”

Freecycle is a free online program where students can enter whatever items they want to throw away.
“The idea is, you put anything on there, not wanting anything in return, and the understanding is that the person will come to you, you don’t have to send or transport it anywhere else and it’s free,” Rankin said.

Welcome to April, Ok, so it’s technically still March but Spring is certainly in the air!! It’s starting to get warmer out, and hopefully we’ll soon all be able to open our windows on a regular basis.

You’d be surprised what other people would love to have. Stuff you don’t even realize you still have. How about that thingamajig you have in that dusty box in the back corner of your basement. I know it’s safely guarded by a field of spider webs, but if you arm
yourself with a metal bowl on your head to protect your hair from getting dirty (please wash it before you cook the family dinner, well, if it’s for the in-laws, it’s up to you), goggles to keep your eyes safe, some earmuffs to keep critters out of your ears, gloves to

A growing trend
Nationwide, there are 103 transition initiatives in 31 states, according to Transition United States, and there are nearly 400 initiatives in 13 languages across the world.
The Northfield group is now planning a community gathering to launch the service and have subscribers meet face to face as they introduce the potential benefits to the community.
The buzz is already building—not surprising for a community known for its volunteer culture, its penchant for recycling as evidenced by online Northfield Freecycle users, its Clothes Closet and Used-a-Bit shops, and loose trade of talents via community bulletin boards.
