The concept of Freecycling allows a person to give his unwanted stuff to someone who deserves it, cutting back on wastage
Freecycle is a worldwide group which focuses on cutting back on trash by making people give away their unwanted stuff to someone who needs it and in the process, cut down on waste.
The Freecycle group has around 1,400 members in the Norcross/Berkeley Lake area only and this group is expanding worldwide. Freecycle was a concept which materialized back in 2003 and the man behind this was Devon Beal, who belongs to Tucson, Arizona.

And put down that Ikea catalogue: although the jolly blue giant has its uses, and does make a peerless book and CD storage system, it is far from the only option. In fact many of its products end up on Freecycle, which anyone decorating their home should sign up to with all urgency. Cheapcycle, Gumtree and craigslist are also worth a sniff around. Mark Zuckerberg gave away all his surplus stuff on Gumtree when he got a place with his girlfriend. Who knows what generous billionaire might be moving this weekend?

A kind of virtual skip, where you can rifle through a roster of online freebie and find anything – from garden stoneware to posters. It’s a community where people exchange unwanted goods for free. Usually the deal is that if you can pick it up, it’s yours. Jenny Keefe from MoneySavingExpert says: “Before you request any cast-offs, it’s Freecycle etiquette to email an offer to the group. Nothing is too small – people will take old magazines, empty paint pots, stuffing for cushions. Though do be wary when donating computers, as the hard drive can retain personal security details. Consider donating PCs to a charity such as computeraid.org instead.”

The 5th annual solar-powered concert and green fair takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 27. The event features live music by Michael P., The Wayback Machine, Spirit Familia and The Opposables. Speakers, games, kids’ activities, food, a freecycle.org “free-meet” and exhibits round out the fair. As stated on its Web site — www.freecycle.org — the mission of the organization is as follows: “Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community.”
Danvers has its very own Freecycle Group, and it’s been active for several years. You can join Freecycle by registering with Yahoo and then signing up for the local group. Membership is free and it’s free to list items you would like to give away.

She said Chopin Hall, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to Hancock County citizens in need, helped solicit contacts and get donations. In addition, one woman on the community action committee helped get donations off Freecycle, and a few people posted soliciting donations on Facebook.
