Furnish your room with Freecycle
For the environmentally or frugally minded among us, whose room weeps in barrenness, the app Freecycle may be useful. It is a grassroots movement and organisation designed to reduce waste, where users both post and request free goods. Some lovely users even offer to drop off the items at your house. Much of the stuff may not be particularly useful to a student – random blocks of wood, for example – but plenty of listings can be useful to furnish student rooms. I know someone who fully furnished numerous houses, from sofas to fridges, just using Freecycle. Some interesting things I’ve seen on the website include a rice cooker, a bicycle, a sleeping bag, hangers, a two-litre water bottle and a bookcase. Gumtree also has a Freebies section, and I have seen a free printer on there – what a bargain!
