University of Michigan Freecycle Tabling Event:

‘Thank you so much again for lending it, and for the swag; we generated lots of excitement about FreeCycle on campus and saw a big increase in engagement with our town!! We had a few local businesses donate sustainable items like tote bags, a gift card to a local vegan restaurant, and a free repair for Birkenstocks which we drew winners for from a raffle of all the new and engaged users. I’m attaching a picture of the table as well as one of the BLUElab Metro Waste Reduction team. I apologize that we didn’t get one of all of us together at the table, we were often working in shifts of 2-3 at a time to accommodate class schedules.’

Denver Post: Learn To Declutter, Recycle, & Organize at Boomers Leading Change Oct 7 Event

We’re also hosting a representative from the Freecycle Network, a grassroots online non-profit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Freecycle participants believe in donating and reusing items. So, rather than throwing away older and/or unused items like furniture, electronics, keepsakes, kitchen and household goods and other stuff, Freecycle online groups post items for free while individuals also post items they are looking for online. It’s a win-win for everybody!

Tucson.com: New year, new you: How to recycle, swap and shred your stuff in Tucson

FREECYCLE SWAP
Another option to recycle and reuse is the Freecycle Post-Holiday Swap and Shred from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Woods Memorial Library, 3455 N. First Ave.

Now in its 10th year, the annual event offers the opportunity to trade unwanted items in good condition — clothing, toys and games, kitchen and household items, books, holiday items, small electronics and much more.

“The swap is a big community recycling celebration. It is a goodwill event,” said Elizabeth Salper, library associate at Woods and the event coordinator.

Salper said that the event is a collaborative effort not only between the library and the community, but also between the offices of Ward Three Councilman Paul Durham and Pima County Constable Bennett Bernal, who provide document shredding in the parking lot. Shredding is free for one standard-sized box of documents and is limited to three boxes; if shredding exceeds one box, a small donation is requested to benefit Lend A Hand Senior Assistance, a nonprofit that provides services to help the elderly remain independent in their homes.

Items left over after the swap are donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson.

Frederick News Post: City Notes: Frederick’s freecycle roundup brings bulk trash pickup back

If you’re looking for a way to get rid of that old mattress or couch, the city of Frederick may have a solution for you.

The city has a new plan to help people who have no way of getting large, unwanted items to its next Freecycle Roundup bulk item drop-off event.

Employees of Frederick Community Action Agency’s Green Jobs program have agreed to help out.

The employees will drive around during the next Freecycle Roundup event in April to pick up items from people who preregister for the service, said Nikki Bamonti, executive assistant to Mayor Randy McClement.

“If it works out, it solves every problem we have had with this event,” McClement said.

The next Freecycle Roundup event will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 11 at Walnut Ridge Park, 1151 Rocky Springs Road. City residents are asked to bring their unwanted bulk items to the park, and nonprofits will be waiting to sort through donated items to see if they can be repurposed.

The launch coincides with UK Recycle Week. Museum Freecycle UK is the first industry-wide and national Freecycle network created since Freecycle was founded in Tucson, Arizona in 2003.

The idea was floated in an article by Alex Mowat, Creative Director of Urban Salon in Design Week two weeks ago and received such a positive response, that Urban Salon went on to work with the Freecycle Network to set up the online portal.
