Morley Observer: Freecycle your way to a clutter-free life!

FROM cheese to sofas, cars to kitchens, Morley Freecyclers are busily giving them away and happily taking them off the hands of others.

The website group is booming, with around 750 members and growing every day as more and more people, perhaps hit by the recession or just wanting to save things from landfill, sign up.

For those not familiar with the internet phenomenon, it all started in 2003 in Tucson, Arizona where a man called Deron Beal had the brilliantly simple idea of creating a website to match up people who need things with those who have things they no longer want.

The idea is that everything is offered freely and without strings, with the theory that this creates a store of goodwill in the community while helping both the environment and those in need.

Bennerotte also suggested checking out Freecycle (think Craigslist, but everything’s free). Take what you would have lugged out to the curb and post it on Freecycle instead. You can then make arrangements privately for the pickup of the items. The City of Edina has nothing against keeping perfectly good items out of landfills, it’s just leaving stuff outside that is in violation of local ordinances.

Cheshire Freecycle is a wonderful, very active group and you can join to get rid of your “junk” to create a treasure for someone else. I’ve given quite a lot of things away on Freecycle while also getting some wonderfully used books, toys and more for our family. You can easily offer your items as well as post for items you are looking for.
