Waste Management World: Re-use and recycle

The Green Party also believes councils need to encourage re-use of items. I thoroughly agree. We throw far too much good stuff away. A visit to any council tip will prove this, with apparently perfect chairs, tables, computers and other ephemera discarded with abandon. I would love to see greater use of the online “freecycle” network which offers unwanted furniture or household items to good homes. Or there are charity shops, of course. Many report a great shortage of items to sell since the recession.

In an era where virtually everything from house hunting to party planning has gone electronic, it should come as no surprise that efforts driving earth-friendly methods of waste reduction are beginning to follow suit.

The leader among these Web-based recycling movements is a nonprofit network known as Freecycle. Nearly eight years after its inception as a grassroots organization out of Tucson, Ariz., Freecycle boasts a network of 5,000 community groups in more than 70 countries comprised of millions of individual members.

Freecycle – This is a community board where you can post items that you no longer want and hopefully there is someone out there who is looking for what you want to move on to a better home. I found a woman who needed notebooks, I had tons of notebooks…she came by and picked them up one day! Out of my office! Professional organizer favorite.

Mansfield News Journal: Freecycle, hand-around set for Saturday in Shelby

SHELBY — Residents have two opportunities to get rid of unwanted items or pick up what they need at Saturday’s Earth Day Celebration downtown.

A freecycle and hand-around will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Blackfork Street. Freecycle items must be clean and in working order. Hand-around clothing may be infant-sized through teen and should be washed.

Both events are free. Freecycle dropoffs should be made before 11 a.m.; hand-around items are welcome anytime during the event. For details, call Harold Shasky at 419-342-5585. Rain date is May 14.

Milford Daily News: Don’t throw it out, Freecycle

Lorena Landry said she feels like she has a new kitchen, but she didn’t spend thousands on appliances.

Instead, Landry scoured the Franklin chapter of the Freecycle Network to get others’ castoffs. Freecycle is a nonprofit organization that runs a worldwide network of online message boards, allowing users to give away items they no longer want and keeping reusable goods out of landfills.

The refrigerator she found could have cost $2,000, but a Mendon resident chose Freecycle to dispose of it, Landry said.

Canton Repository: Earth Day – Recycle your junk online

Ann O’Toole had a microwave mounted under a cabinet.

The Plain Township woman wanted to get rid of the used appliance and give to someone else.

She put the white microwave on Freecycle.org — a nonprofit online network — and it was claimed in no time.

The network allows folks to give and get free stuff from others in their town.
