News10.net: Freecycle: One person’s trash, another’s treasure

Monday, February 28th, 2011

SACRAMENTO, CA – An Arizona-based non-profit organization said they help keep tons of trash out of landfills each day by finding people who have a need for what others consider used-up junk.

SLIDESHOW: Free for you, load-off for them

Freecycle.org, in the tradition of Craigslist or eBay, hosts an online marketplace, only there are no prices for any of the items, and the things that are up for grabs might have otherwise been thrown in the trash by those who are trying to off-load them.

“You know, people throw away stuff that is so good,” said Citrus Heights resident Janet Menschel, a Freecycle.org user since 2005. She motioned toward her kitchen table, saying, “I got the lap table, the placemats, the chairs” from Freecycle. Menschel did not pay a penny for the items because they were listed by people at Freecycle.org who wanted only to get rid of them.

Joining Freecycle was pivotal. I started really going through our stuff and passing along anything that was unused or unauthentic to our actual lifestyle.

Watching so much of our stuff (money) grow legs and walk out the door was eye-opening, edifying and life-changing. We stopped buying so much, as we now appreciated what momentary pleasure most of it brought.

Peoria Journal Star: Finding materials close to home

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

WANTED: Volunteer(s) to moderate local Freecycle website.

Judging from recent posts, the Peoria area Freecycle Network at www.freecycle.org is pretty active. As recently as last week, items wanted included chainlink fence and parts, a dog crate, a baby crib, coupons and purses. Among the items being offered? World Wrestling Entertainment toys.

But if the local not-for-profit exchange network is good at matching people who have something to give with those who need something, it’s not having much luck meeting its own needs.

Deron Beal, the Arizona man who founded The Freecycle Network, says the Peoria network is being moderated by a volunteer interim team for now.

Like a lot of people who get a charge out of a good deal, I shop on Freecycle, which is an online community through which people can give away what they don’t need, and find what they do want, free.

But now it’s February, and I’ve been noticing a distressing trend of listings like:

OFFER: Yoga mat, blocks and strap.
OFFER: Free weights.
OFFER: Exercise DVDs.
