Sunday, December 26th, 2010

Kaplan is also a fan of websites such as Freecycle and Craigslist, which offer an alternative to sending unwanted household items to the landfill. Both sites allow users to locate used merchandise for sale or for free in the community or offer their used merchandise to other members.

“We lessen our consumption by using Freecycle and Craigslist to find and give away merchandise and other things we need or no longer want. We try to make “new” our last choice. It is really fun and often meet like-minded people doing the same.” For more information, visit www.freecycle.org and sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/.

Boxford —

In an age of growing environmental awareness, more and more techniques for recycling are being conceived. Though she does not consider herself “a huge environmentalist,” Judi Stickney of Boxford is helping, in a big way, to contribute to the recycling effort.

Stickney, a member of a program called the Freecycle Network for the past four years, recently introduced it to the Tri-Towns this fall.

Freecycle is a world-wide, non-profit organization, “that promotes recycling unused and/or unwanted items by offering them to others (for free) on a message board.” It is made up of 4,864 groups with 7,603,875 members across the globe.

NJ TODAY: Give The Gift Of A Trash-Free New Year

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Try starting with your holiday trash this year. First, avoid buying presents with excess packaging and plastic. Second, recycle as much of the wrapping paper and packaging as you can. Third, if you have a shiny new toy that makes something else obsolete, don’t just throw the old one away – find out how to donate it, recycle it, or “freecycle” it (by letting someone else take it for free).

Make your own New Year’s resolution. It doesn’t have to be zero garbage, but how about 25 or 50 percent less garbage? Find out more about what can be recycled and how at the Recycling NJ website (www.recyclingnj.com), and join the “freecycle” movement (www.freecycle.org).

I’m not afraid to ask McDonalds locations, one by one, if they will extend their free coffee promotion, which ended two weeks ago. I buy food, coffee and entertainment impulsively, as though I’ve been unable to spend for the past decade.
