If you put your head to it, there are solutions you can work out for most things. Outside our own kitchen stand two fridges. But only one cools food and water — the other one, an old non-functional one, we use as a storage cabinet for our documents. Then there’s this mail I recently received through something called a Freecycle network (www.freecycle.org) — a woman in Panjim offering to collect used milk packets from others, compile them into batches of 100, exchange each batch for a fresh milk packet (a scheme offered by Goa Dairy), and pass the packets thus obtained to a local animal shelter. For free. Like I said earlier, there are many people out there doing good things. You just have to look around.

It’s organized by communities and the Columbia/Jefferson City area has it’s own group. You can keep things that still has some useful life out of the landfill, as well as score some free stuff.

A friend of mine told me that he found a pair of very expensive shoes for his wife by using FreeCycle.org, where customers exchange all kinds of items they no longer want for things they do want or need. His wife is best left in the dark about the source of this deal, but when I learned about it, I applauded.

Chicago Now: How The Freecycle Network™ Got My Daughter To Practice Piano and

Over 7 Million people use The Freecycle Network™ (www.freecycle.org) – one of the best digital community assistance inventions on earth. Above you see a photo of the free piano I got from another The Freecycle Network™ user. My youngest daughter has been playing piano for five years on a keyboard. When this piano arrived at our home, she was able to hear what a real instrument sounds like. Since we got the piano, she has put down her electronic toys, turned off the tv, and has been practicing piano – on her own – over an hour a day every day. It has been wonderful for her and has truly given her something special to experience.

Consumer Center – Need something, but don’t have the cash? Check out Freecycle, a place for saving usable items from the landfill and passing them on to someone else – for free.

Greg Bartolo of Enola has been a member for about three years.

“It’s saved me some money, because I’ve been able to pick up some things for the kids,” he said. “Toys, cribs and whatnot.”

Freecycle.org is a national website. There are hundreds of groups in Pennsylvania alone.

The Freecycle Network – Freecycle is a great place to score lots of freebies. The Freecycle Network is made up of 4,793 groups with more than seven million members around the world who simply want to keep stuff out of landfills. Simply post what you’d like for free and another member of the group may have it. Of course, it’s a good idea to give back, so make sure you hand out free stuff to others when you can.

Mark sold his houseboat and set about preparing himself for his new life. He posted an advert on Freecycle asking for a tent, a yurt, a caravan or any other type of shelter and was immediately rewarded by his first taste of human kindness.

“Asking for a caravan was just a joke, really, I didn’t expect to get one,” he says.

“But this woman had an old one she no longer needed and it was costing her to keep, and so she gave it to me.”
